I SEE EVERYTHING! What's Your Tony Vote?

Okay, I know this is late and everyone else has moved on. But, maybe some of you still want to discuss the Tony Awards? I think everyone can agree that were some major snubs, even in the nominations.

You can probably guess that my first entry on the snub list is – Jason Robert Brown. My hopes for the score of 13 were exceptionally high (after Parade, The Last 5 Years, Songs for a New World) and it did not disappoint. Of course I thought my cast-mates were amazing, but maybe some of them will have a shot next season.

In the "Featured Actress in a Musical" category, I think Heidi and Susan (from [title of show]) should have been nominated. I also thought [tos] should have gotten more recognition, though I was very happy Hunter Bell got a book nomination.

As you might know, I am also a huge fan of Next to Normal. I could not be more thrilled for two-time Tony winner, Tom Kitt, and am also thrilled for Alice Ripley and Brian Yorkey! There were other extremely powerful performances in N2N that I think should have been nominated. (I also think N2N should have swept A LOT more awards on Tony Sunday, but what can you do…)

But, there were so many musicals this year and only so many shows and casts can be nominated. I just feel that everyone I’ve mentioned here did tremendous work that I think was so worthy of recognition. There were also tons of plays this year. What were some musicals this year that you feel missed out in nominations where you think they should have been remembered?

Agreed about Jason Robert Brown 1000 times. And I feel that you, Aaron, as well as Allie and Graham should have been nominated. However, I disagree with Jennifer. I do not think Billy Elliot is overrated in the slightest, and those boys deserved it more than anyone.

9 to 5, should have been nominated for Best Musical, and Choreography, and Stephanie J. Block should have been nominated for Best Actress. I totally agree with title of show, 13, and N2N!!!

I'm happy that I'm not alone in thinking Billy Elliot is, if I may borrow a line from Shrek the Musical, "grossly overrated". Like Angela Lansbury said in her acceptance speech, it wasn't a fair year; not just for the actresses she was up against, but for most of the other shows nominated. Having all 3 Billys win is like having one person win but their understudies come up and receive awards too; it just seems so--what's the word--pretentious. I'm sure they only did that because that's what happened in the West End too. I agree with Sky about how Best Leading Actor should have gone to Brian d'Arcy James, because he wears all that makeup and padding and gives a solid and even touching performance. As for Featured Actor, that should have gone to Christopher Sieber, hands down. He is not only a genius with timing and humor, but he performs the entire show on his knees! That dedication alone should have gotten him the Tony! And Sutton Foster, well, she blew me away as Fiona, but there was something about Alice Ripley that made me happy for her when she won. That one number at the Tonys convinced me she was excellent. Sutton did already win once and was nominated many times before, so I guess there's no harm done to her ego. I'm surprised Equus didn't receive more nominations. It was electrifying, haunting, and deep. Daniel Radcliffe proved he could be more than just Harry Potter and it was a crime for him to not be nominated. I wish Waiting for Godot and Shrek the Musical could have had some more nominations too, as they are both very excellent despite what some say.

9 to 5 should have had much more nominations. When I saw Allison Janney was nominated over Stephanie J Block, I was so angry. The only reason Janney got the nomination is because her name comes first in the credits. Janney doesn't give as much effort and power as Stephanie. Stephanie also gets the loudest roar in Get Out and Stay Out (her final big number). So Stephanie J Block deserved a nomination for Best Leading Actress, and 9 to 5 deserved a nomination for Best Musical. If the show was nominated, they should have chosen Stephanie to sing Get Out and Stay Out.

Gabriella, you have your right to love BE. My point about the boys working just as hard as every other actor in that catagory doesn't quite make sense in my mind. First off, they perform only about 5 hours a week, when other men perform 16 hours a week. Many of those men have been training in both singing, acting and dancing for their entire lives, which has been longer than all of those boy's put together. Just because those boys are young and great dancers it does not mean that they work harder (if as hard) as all other actors on Broadway.

I loved Billy Elliot. I was impressed by not only the dancing, but by the music. Billy Elliot was the first show I cried at and I am not one to cry often. I would just like to point out that just because the boys who play Billy do not perform every single night doesn't mean they do not work as hard as the other actors who perfom eight times a week. The boys have the most intense dancing role that requires constant training and practice. They also have been preparing for this role for many months and have been dancing for many years. As for seeing many parts of the show in other shows, you cannot walk into every show you see and expect to see something completely different from all other shows. Billy Elliot and Les Miz are similar because their dilemma is common, but I could name a hundred things that are different between them. As a whole, I really enjoyed Billy Elliot.

Mattie, I completely disagree. I think that Billy Elliot was boring and un-original. The boys were cute, but nothing compared to some of the other actors who perform their show EIGHT times a week. When I was sitting in that theater, I felt as though I had already seen many parts of that show before in other shows (solidarity looked like a modern version of les miz and does Elton John need a song about dresses in every one of his new shows?) To tell you the truth, I don't understand how people DID like the show-I can understand if you are a big dancer and your story is almost identical to Billy's. I just was not entertained, I walked out of the theater saying, 'What's the big deal? That was one of the worst pieces of theater I ever sat through." I don't think I would see that show again if someone payed me to.

another thing though...how many people think that billy elliot pretty much robbed pretty much every tony from all the other shows? i have friends that think that and i completely disagree, its an incredibly amazing, drop-dead great show and i feel like it deserved every single one of its tony wins! feel free 2 comment back and i wont be hurt if you disagree!!!!

N2N should have gotten more awards. It should have won best musical. Although Billy and N2N are two completely different stories, N2N requires much more acting talent, and the emotional effect on its audience is amazing. Billy was great too I saw Trent and the dancing was brilliant!
