One of my favorite things to do in New York is to take my dogs on a long walk in Central Park and listen to an entire cast recording. To tell the truth, when I'm in New York, I do this multiple times a week! I love either rediscovering, or getting a full listen through, a score I know and love.
A recent example is
Baby, which I hadn’t listened to in a while. I had forgotten how fun it is - "Fatherhood Blues" anyone?!
When I was much younger, my parents would play the cast recording for me before we went to the show. This was to familiarize me with the songs so that I would enjoy the experience more. Of course, I think it can be equally (and sometimes even more) effective to hear the music and lyrics in the theater for the first time.
Now, I try to see a show early in its run before the cast recording is released. Then I get to hear a score that I’ve never heard before. Often, I’ll buy cast recordings because I want to hear more work from specific writers and performers. I also get suggestions from people, and often the two methods intersect!
Sometimes, out of contest, a score will seem more odd than others and you really have to listen a few times. I am always surprised that some truly awesome scores are not more popular or appreciated. Other times it seems like everyone else loves some score, and I’ll wonder why it took me so long to listen to it!
I, and others I'm sure, would love some suggestions on new cast recordings to listen to. Any ideas?
