I SEE EVERYTHING! Including Regional Theatre

When a regional theater announces cool casting for an upcoming show, or if it’s a show or production I’m particularly interested in, I will try to make it to that production. Most recently I ventured with Jennifer Tepper and Anika Chapin to Paper Mill Playhouse to see their awesome production of 1776. It was my first exposure to the show and the great cast did not disappoint.

Something hilarious happened at 1776 that I have never seen in a Broadway theater. People in the audience were dressed up like characters from 1776! Have you ever seen anything like that at a show? Later this summer, I am hoping to visit my grandparents in Pittsburgh when Into the Woods (with Hunter Foster, Beth Leavel, Stanley Bahorek, and other great performers) will be playing there. I am really looking forward to seeing this production.

Another cool thing about regional theater is that a lot of new work, from established and unknown writers, premieres there frequently. For example, Tony Kushner’s new play is currently having its world premiere at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. When I was a lot younger, I saw Little Shop of Horrors at a nearby theater in South Florida. I had no idea how lucky I was to see Alice Ripley as Audrey and Hunter Foster as Seymour in that production!

Sometimes, like in revivals, the regional production of a show may have a different “take” on the show. This new production might give you different insight and thoughts on the show. Have you ever traveled and seen a regional production of a show? What shows have you seen regionally and how were they?

After finishing up at the shrek stage door we walked passed the wicked stage door and saw a girl dressed up exactly like alphaba green skin and all!!! It was weird but I guess she was a super fan. She also followed us onto the subway and we were just staring at her ha

One of our favorite regional theatres, the Florida Stage, focuses on new works. We really loved End Days there (produced off-Broadway this year) and the Good German, both of which were world premiers. I also like the fact that in regional theatres we often see the same actors at different venues in wildly different parts. It is especially nice that people can have a theatre career outside of New York, for at least some part of their lives.

Regionally? Seussical. I thiught it was the best play I've ever seen, besides Wicked and 13. Have you ever seen that, Aaron? And I didn't know that 1776 was still being performed. I saw the movie, but never the play. I'm going to have to look that up. Is the Paper Mill Playhouse you saw 1776 in in New Jersey?
