The #1 place for people who love Broadway.

Luckily for me, my birthday falls around Memorial Day at the cusp of the summer season. This was always a bonus when I was in school, because we got a long weekend for the holiday. This year a few friends and I decided to hit the beautiful Fire Island for a relaxing, beachy good time. The island is a to a train to a shuttle to a ferry to the beach. A great place to kick back and leave the city behind. I secured a great rental and convinced 11 close friends to make the journey for an amazing weekend. Food, drinks, beaches, a few drag queens, and many a birthday wishes…we were set.

The unique thing about Fire Island is that you can have whatever time you want. Chill, party, read, run around in circles, juggle fire - nobody cares what you do to relax. The point is to have a blast and get some fun with friends.

For the last couple years I’ve been in shows and could never get out of the city on the weekends. It’s more crowded with the 9-5 crowd and I ain’t talking about the musical. That’s what I love about the island though… good mix of peeps and there’s always some crazy adventure to be had. Like the piano player in the Grove who dedicated an entire song to my friend Karyn’s sassiness while 7 of us pretended we knew the lyrics.

A lot of my posse hadn’t experienced the island and of course the first day we got there we had crappy weather. So we played games in the house and ate not-so-good-for-us food. Although once the weather cleared, we bee lined for the beach and staked out our plot. I always think I’m going to read and get stuff done when I lay that towel down and relax under the sun. Indeed I do not. I lay there like a lazy sack and focus on nothing but clouds through squints. Well, that and choreographed a couple ‘should be shows’ by the water… which our friendly beach neighbors enjoyed.

Later that night we grilled chicken and steak skewers for dinner and played some slow jams. Carlos and Matt cooked while the rest of us lounged. Joe made a delish cake for my birthday. Organic, no less… who knew. Blowing out my candles I remembered how lucky I was to be in a beautiful place surrounded by even more beautiful people. One of the best birthdays ever… gonna miss being whatever age I just was. Can’t wait to head back to the island again this summer. Hit it
