I Am A...
Fan, Writer
About Me:
I am a former actor, sometime director, a librettist/lyricist and most recently, novelist. I write books for young adults, which means middle-school and high school aged readers and theater fans of all ages.

I put the cover of my latest book as my photo because I think my fellow BroadwaySpacers would dig it. MY LIFE: THE MUSICAL. It's about us, darlings. All of us — the young, the old, the straight, the gay, the theatre-obsessed. Now in stores, or order it online at all the usual bookselling spots, like Amazon or Barnes and Noble or (best of all) your local indie bookstore.

My other main theatrical claim to fame is that I was in the original Broadway cast of Merrily We Roll Along. Oh, we should talk.

I also have written some musicals, and am very proud to have won the Richard Rodgers Award for new musicals for my work on The Tutor. I wrote book and lyrics, Andrew Gerle wrote the music, and so far the show has been seen in development or production at The O'Neill Music Theatre Center, The York Theatre, The Public Theater's New Works Now! Fest, The Village Theatre (Issaquah, WA), Prospect Theatre Company, and the Spirit of Broadway Theatre (Norwich, CT).

My Favorite Shows:
So many! Sweeney Todd is probably tops, with a few other Sondheim shows up there as well. And She Loves Me, of course! Perfection.
The Show I Want To See Next:
Oh, Gabriel Byrne in Camelot, but the tix are waaaaaay expensive....
My Favorite Actors:
I have big talent crushes on Michael Cerveris and Raul Esparza. Also, every single actor who has ever done a reading, workshop, demo recording or production of any show of mine. You are all geniuses and wonderful human beings and none of you get paid enough (when you get paid at all.)
My Favorite Writer/Composer:
I love and admire Sondheim's work madly, but the older I get the more I appreciate the absolute humanistic perfection of so much of the Rodgers/Hammerstein catalogue. Gershwin, Weill, all good. Of the young 'uns, Jason Robert Brown is mad talented.

"A LOVE LETTER TO THE THEATER..."

There are still seven weeks to go until the launch of MY LIFE: THE MUSICAL (opening at a bookstore near you on March 11, 2008). But some early reviews are in, and they are so nice I wanted to share them.

“…My Life: The Musical is a love letter to the theater…I highly recommend this title for theater buffs from middle school and up, especially for fans of musicals. Any 'drama club geek from the suburbs' (as the author describes herself) will be completely… Continue
