Dear K8: Redefine Success

I want to share something I wish I’d been told a long time ago – it’s what I say at every talk-back or Q&A session: Re-define your personal definition of “success.”

I used to think success was getting a great job in a great show at a great theater and subsequently getting great reviews. I realized early on that by thinking that way I was putting a tremendous amount of pressure on myself.

In order to stay resilient in this business, we need to put stock in the little… Continue

Dear K8: Should You Ever Lie on Your Resume?

Hello readers!

I was thinking about how hard it is to get started as an actor in New York. The money you spend when you can’t afford to spend it, the time you put into taking classes or going to auditions with no guarantee of success, the relentless fist-shaking we do – knowing how impossible it is to get our foot in any door. More specifically, I was thinking about the "Catch-22" nature of resumes. People don’t want to hire you if you don’t have any experience, but how in the world… Continue

Dear K8: Becoming a Muse

Dear K8,

Hi! I'm 16 and I've been to quite a few auditions for Broadway and touring shows, but how do I find out about doing readings and workshops? I've heard that's a good way to start but it's really hard to find the information. I use Backstage.com and Playbill.com, but I really can't find information on those sort of projects! Can you help…

Dear K8: The Parent Trap

Greetings readers!

I have decided this week to address an issue that has surfaced in a few questions: the issue of parental support. It is no secret that acting is an unreliable profession, therefore making parents legitimately nervous when they hear their children say, “I want to be on Broadway!”

My own parents started hearing me make such claims as soon as I learned what Broadway was and, thankfully, gave their support and encouragement. However, it is perfectly… Continue

Dear K8: How Do I Start?

Dear K8,

My name is Casey, and I am a 7th grade actress who LOVES Broadway, singing, acting, dancing and being onstage in general. I see all these shows where there are kids my age in them but... I can't seem to find any auditions. I feel like I am stuck in community theater and there are so many other opportunities that I could be pursuing! I know that community theater isn't a BAD thing but... I just want to find auditions somewhere bigger. I know everyone "starts" somewhere but I…

Dear K8,
I'm not sure what I want to hear from you, but I've hit a rocky spot in my performing life. I'm only 16 years old, however November will mark a full year since I've had a part in a show. I've been in the ensemble of a high school production since then and directed a few little kid shows, but I can't help feeling like everyone around me is getting parts and I'm stuck longing to be in the spot light. I know that I'm talented, but I feel like right now is just a waiting period. There really isn't much opportunity for me- I'm in NJ, so I'm close to NY, but my parents can't take me in.. What I'm trying to get at is this question: Is me not getting parts now a sign that I'm not good enough for professional theatre?

Thanks for reading,
Emily Ezzo

Hey, Kate! First of all, how awesome of you to give so much of yourself in an industry that can be generally cut throat and selfish. Way to challenge the precedent! "What the world needs now is love, sweet love."

So...here's my question:
I'm moving to the city at the end of the summer/early fall. Where's the best place to look for affordable apartments with transportation to and from the hustle and bustle of the epicenter? I'll be working, auditioning and training at the SITI Company. So...help me figure this out. Please?

hey K8,
I have a problem I love my small theater group and I help out a lot with it and it's like a home and a bunch of friends go to it too. The problem is, I want to try out for a larger theater group that is harder to get in to. Should I stay at my smaller group or try out for the bigger one?
