'Rock of Ages' locks Broadway run Shows will begin at Brooks Atkinson in March By GORDON COX 'Rock of Ages'
Quote: "Rock of Ages," the Off Broadway tuner that draws its score from a variety of 1980s rock hits, will jump to Broadway in the spring with a reduced pricing plan and in-seat cocktail service.
Show will sit out the industrywide January doldrums by shuttering at Off Broadway's New World Stages Jan. 4, then begin Rialto perfs at the Brooks Atkinson Theater in March.
As many producers tout discounted tickets to encourage legit biz in what's shaping up to be a particularly chilly winter, "Rock" arrives on Broadway with lower-than-usual pricetags already in place.
Tickets for the Rialto incarnation of the tuner will range from $46.50 to $99, with a top ticket price of $89 on weeknights and $99 for weekend perfs. (Most musicals on the Main Stem top out at around $120; "Billy Elliot" stretches up to $135. )
The Off Broadway production of "Rock" encourages a party vibe by allowing the crowd to bring drinks to their seats. (It's original incarnation in Hollywood was in a nightbclub.) Producers aim to offer in-seat cocktail service at the Brooks Atkinson, turning the theater into the only Broadway venue to do so.
Landlord the Nederlander Org has OK'd the plan, but the exact logistics have yet to be determined.
The show's Off Broadway cast includes Constantine Maroulis, Will Swenson and Kelli Barrett. Producer Matt Weaver expects the ensemble to remain largely the same, although Swenson is still deciding between "Rock" and "Hair," another Off Broadway production getting a Broadway run next spring.
Weaver said capitalization costs for the transfer haven't been nailed down yet, but the current production, sizable by Off Broadway standards, will fit with little tweaking into its Broadway space.
Book of "Rock" is penned by Chris D'Arienzo, who also has been tapped by New Line Cinema to write and direct a movie version of the musical. Plot centers on a young couple on the L.A. music scene who must overcome the obstacles of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle in order to be together.
Show incorporates familiar tunes from acts including Journey, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister and Whitesnake. Kristin Hanggi ("Bare") helms "Rock," which has choreography by Kelly Devine.
Design team includes Beowulf Borritt (sets), Gregory Gale (costumes), Jason Lyons (lights) and Walter Trarbach (sound).
Weaver produces with Carl Levin, Jeff Davis, Scott Prisand and Corner Store Fund I in association with Janet Billig Rich, Hillary Weaver, Stefany and Simon Bergson, Charles Rolecek, Susanne Brook, Barry Habib, Israel Wolfson, Jennifer Maloney and Prospect Pictures.
"Rock" begins Broadway previews March 20 ahead of an April 7 opening.
The timeless rock of the 1980s and the classic "hair bands" that filled the airwaves for more than a decade have inspired a theatrical experience depicting the rock scene in Hollywood circa 1987. Rock of Ages features big chords, big dreams and big hair - telling its story through hits from iconic groups such as Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx, Foreigner, Poison, Night Ranger, Twisted Sister, Asia, Whitesnake and rockers like Pat Benetar.
Running Time: 1 hour and 50 minutes, including one 15 miinute intermission
Audience: Appropriate 10 + Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
Constantine Maroulis — the "American Idol" finalist who was seen in Broadway's The Wedding Singer and Off-Broadway's Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris — will head the cast of the 1980's set Off-Broadway musical Rock of Ages, according to Variety.
The new musical — which features the songs of Journey, Bon Jovi and Styx, among others — will begin previews at Off-Broadway's New World Stages Sept. 30 with an official opening scheduled for Oct. 16. No other casting has been announced.
Directed by Kristin Hanggi, the production will feature choreography by Kelly Devine; Dave Gibbs is co-musical director. The design team will include Beowulf Borritt (sets), Gregory Gale (costumes) and Jason Lyons (lights).
The musical, according to the industry paper, is set in a "Hollywood rock club threatened by developers, [which] serves as the backdrop for a romance between a wannabe guitar hero and a small-town girl.
"
Carl Levin and Matt Weaver are lead producers of the musical, which was penned by Chris D'Arienzo. Scott Prisand, Janet Billig Rich, Hillary Weaver, Jeff Davis, Charles Rolecek and Barry Habib are executive producers.
Rock of Ages ran for four weeks in L.A. in early 2006 at the Vanguard Hollywood, where the cast included Laura Bell Bundy, recently on Broadway in Legally Blonde; and Kyle Gass, Jack Black's partner in the band Tenacious D. The show also ran for a week at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino in May 2006.
A Brooklyn native, Constantine Maroulis is a graduate of both the Boston Conservatory and the Berklee College of Music. He trained as an apprentice at the Williamstown Theatre Festival and appeared as Roger in a tour of Rent. In addition to his performances on "American Idol," he has also been seen on "Law & Order: SVU" and in several independent films. Maroulis played an engagement at the Public Theater's Joe's Pub as well as a stint in Broadway's The Wedding Singer and Off-Broadway's Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. He was recently seen in the Premier Theatre Company's production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

Maybe Constantine could sing in my musical. I'd love to get your feedback anyway. You can listen to the entire production on my BroadwaySpace site. I sang all the character parts myself as I composed the music but I think you will still find the story and music compelling. If you'd like a script, let me know and I'll send you one. Thanks for any feedback you can share!
I don't have familiarity for how to decorate the page, beyond the Encore image that I have. I will need the time to figure this out. But I really appreciate your suggestion. I am sure that you are right about this! Best from Beth
