REVIEW: Elling

If the sensibilities of Elling remind you of a quirky, feel-good foreign film, complete with a final snapshot photo of all the characters that would display itself just before the end credits.........that's because it's exactly what Elling is. The 2001 Norwegian comedy (adapted from a novel) was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2002 Academy Awards. I haven't seen the movie, but based on this very closely… Continue

REVIEW: Colin Quinn Long Story Short

After over a decade's absence, Colin Quinn is back on Broadway, delivering the history of the world (no, not that History of the World) in only 75 minutes. If that sounds like a tall order, that's because it is — the format, by its nature, allows only for a cursory overview of a handful of the Earth's major empires and the comedy rarely delves particularly deep.

REVIEW: The Scottsboro Boys

In these dark days of musical theatre in which audiences inexplicably continue to feed their hard-earned dollars to the almighty Box of Juke, the legitimately original score is now as elusive as the rare Ghost Orchid was to John Laroche in The Orchid Thief (and in its wonderful film adaptation, Adaptation.). Even shows that once had original scores are now augmented with additional, more popularly recognized numbers, a la the inclusion of "I Say A Little Prayer"… Continue

REVIEW: Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson

Well, they certainly got the title right. This show is indeed worthy of a double "bloody." "Bloody Andrew Jackson" wouldn't even begin to do justice to the amount of blood that is drawn, bathed and basked in, and stained permanently on the clothing of its title character. Oh, also, I think it's a metaphor too.

The show is an irresistibly goofy riff on the Andrew Jackson mythos, if such a thing can be said to actually exist, as filtered through what approximates to…
