I Am A...
Fan, Writer
About Me:
Broadway Mouth is a pseudonym (that’s a shocker, I know) I use in writing about Broadway. I am a playwright, novelist, and essayist actively pursuing production and publication. My writings can be found elsewhere on the Internet under my real name. My body of unpublished and unproduced work includes two musicals (sans music, go figure), two novels, and several television pilots. The picture to your left is from a poster I produced for a reading of my first musical. I am currently working on revising one of my novels to actively pursue publication.

My Favorite Shows:
There are so many. At the very tops are JANE EYRE and HELLO, DOLLY!.
The Show I Want To See Next:
IN THE HEIGHTS

Who is Broadway Mouth (and What is His Name?)

Broadway Mouth is the pen name I use when writing my Broadway Blog, which I use as a platform for sharing my ideas concerning musicals and plays, plus current trends and thoughts in theatre today.

I choose to keep my real identity secret for several reasons and not because I have a special mutant power to hide. One major goal in my life is to have a musical produced on Broadway, so I don't want my outspoken ideas to work against me. I don't want to criticize a show or a song then have it bite me in the Broadway later on, you know. I am never intentionally malicious, but that wouldn't stop some people from shooting me down if I were to be candid about a show.

I attempt to make my blog an intelligent discussion of theatre, often inspired by current events, posts on message boards, or ideas I'm reading. I love serious discussion of theatre (and the fun kind a well) because I love to learn. I hope to soon be able to find the right job in NYC or Los Angeles so I can further my training as a writer.

Broadway Recording Producers: Stop the Insanity!

I typically wait at least several months before buying pop/rock albums because I don’t want to get burned by any more “special tracks” available exclusively at one store. It is frustrating to buy a CD at one store, only to realize that you are missing out on a track or six available elsewhere

Let’s be honest, it would be very easy to steal music for free online, but as obsessive Broadway collectors, we enjoy supporting the artists and doing what is honest and right—paying for our… Continue

Networking: I Hate It. I Need It. (And So Do You!)

In the arts, networking is everything. You can be the next Richard Rodgers, but if you don’t know how to network, you’ll never get anywhere. Just check out producer Ken Davenport’s recommendation on getting your work to a producer—get it into the hands of someone who will act as a go-between. Even submit to NYMF, you have to know the right person.

That’s one of the reasons why getting into this… Continue

What will you have been Ten Minutes Ago?

Ten minutes ago I saw you

I looked up when you came through the door

My head started reeling

You gave me the feeling

The room had no ceiling or floor

Ten minutes ago she was a secretary. Ten minutes ago she was a wedding singer. Ten minutes ago she was scooping poop. Ten minutes ago he was fired from TCBY. But now, they are Ethel Merman, Idina Menzel,… Continue

Defining a Golden Age

I don’t know if you can actually identify a golden age while you’re in it. It’s one of those phenomena that only become apparent after some distance and reflection.

Yet I have written about (and others have been considering) the possibility of there being another Golden Age for musicals on Broadway, perhaps something akin, if not replicating, the great Golden Age spurned on by the revolutionary Oklahoma! in 1943.

But before the question of a Second Golden Age of… Continue

Tips for the Young Theatre Connoisseur

One thing I love about BroadwaySpace is seeing how many young people there are on the site, writing about their favorite shows and stars—Idina Menzel and Wicked, Legally Blonde on MTV, or Spring Awakening. Some of these are kids who live far away from New York and may not have enough money to actually attend a Broadway show or tour, but the budding passion is there—perhaps birthed by the movies of Hairspray and Dreamgirls, or by seeing Beauty and… Continue

Hey how you doin? Yup it's between Delancy & Broome! This is more of an indie event than a theater thing and should be much fun. Hope to see you there! Have a great trip.

I will have to check and see if it is coming to Kansas City, for my sister lives there and I would love to take both her and her husband to see this great show. I saw A CHORUS LINE at the Lyric Opera House in KC way back in the 70's and that is deeply set in my memories, for it was after the show had won the Tony and all of the other awards it accumulated. Thank you for the information.

the show went really well,,, great responsive crowd, Most of the material was new first time out there. So, that's always interesting when songs get a voice for the first time. Learning all the official do's and don'ts of the New York scene. I should have some videos posted very soon.

The Beechman is a great space for development. I have a concert version of one of my unproduced shows THE AMAZING RIVER PARADE on April 17.

Thanks for the reply message. I am happy to hear about your connection with the playwright and your new show. What's it about?

RnH is incredible! Yes I have had the pleasure of meeting Ted Chapin. What a wonderful person, a walking treasure of knowledge about the industry and he makes RnH a very interesting palce to work. I could go on and on about the place....

I have been able to see a number of shows: ALTAR BOYZ, GYPSY, SPRING AWAKENING (2), SPEED THE PLOW, 13 with a JRB Talk Back, THE FANTASTICKS with a Tom Jones talk back...

BMI would have been a very good thing but right now I'm going to concentrate on my job at RnH (I have been working mostly in the music department) and on the four projects I have going with the interest of two producers right now... so I have been busy....

Hi!, NYC is GREAT!!!! I have had a chance to go from 0 times at a Broadway show to almost 10 in the last two months. BMI said thanks but no thanks.... I knew I was in trouble when I was the only cat showing up without an entourage (I mean some groups were as large as five people, composer, two or three singers and an accompanist). I went in just myself, new material and the sudden realization that I had never been on the auditionee side of an audition before... that was enlightening. But I do have two readings I am working on and I got a part-time job at Rodgers and Hammerstein. All in all life is fairly amazing.... thanks for asking. How are you?

Ah, she's pretty awesome. And she seems like the kind of person who would listen to what you have to say. I'd love to hear some demos! Best of luck!
