Is there anyone out there who loves A Catered Affair, or is it just me?

About Me:
I have been singing for nine seasons with the Broadway Chorus at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, a community chorus that celebrates the American (and occasionally British) musical theater. I have been a avid fan of musicals and plays for much of my life. I am an ordained interfaith minister and worked as the Coordinator of Volunteers at a meals-on-wheels program, recruiting volunteers to offer companionship and practical help to ill, homebound elderly. I LOST MY JOB IN FEBRUARY DUE TO NYC BUDGET CUTS so I have not been seeing all that many shows and have not had the energy or capacity to continue writing blogs. I hope that I can get back to this as it has offered much meaning in my life.

AN AFTERNOON OF PURE MUSICAL JOY

Last weekend I had one of the most wonderul muscial experiences that I have had in quite some time: it was one of the most inspiring, deeply joyful and even blissful Broadway experiences that I have had the great pleasure to encounter this season, right in my neighborhood.

For 39 years, the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan has been presenting yearly series of celebrations of the lyricists who have made extraordinary contributions to Broadway, Hollywood, cabaret, as well as the world of… Continue

David Rabe's "Streamers"

I had the good fortune on Wednesday to catch the Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of David Rabe’s 1976 play Streamers, set in 1965 in an army barracks in Virginia where a group of soldiers are waiting for their assignments for active duty, most likely in Vietnam. I wasn’t planning to write about Streamers as it closing tomorrow. However, I found this play to be so extraordinarily affective and effective that I felt moved to say something. I found the play to be extremely compelling and was… Continue

MY WISHES FOR A HAPPIER NEW YEAR

On the last day of the year, and with reflections on the coming year, I am thinking about all of the people who are struggling and facing major challenges in many arenas of their lives. Because of this, I sometimes find the words "Happy New Year," while a lovely wish and hope, to miss the mark for me. What I personally can stand behind more fully is to draw on the words that I saw in the window of the Best Buy on East 86th Street: so my sincere hope and wishes for all of you is for a Happier… Continue

A PLAY THAT I WISH HAD FULLY LIVED UP TO ITS POTENTIAL--A PRAYER FOR MY ENEMY

A Prayer for My Enemy was written by one of my favorite playwrights, Craig Lucas, who wrote, among other things, the absolutely wonderful plays Reckless and Prelude to a Kiss, and also the very excellent book for the Light in the Piazza. He also wrote a deeply touching screenplay, Longtime Companion, set during the height of the Aids crisis. And one would imagine that putting a play by Mr. Lucas in the extremely able hands of director Barlett Sher, probably best known as the director of the… Continue

NOT SO "MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG:" SONDHEIM'S ROAD SHOW

Calling all musical theater aficionados, Broadway babies and fans of Stephen Sondheim. I implore you—DO NOT MISS ROAD SHOW, now playing at The Public Theater until December 28th. Otherwise, you will probably never have the opportunity to see what sadly may be Mr. Sondheim’s final original musical (though let’s hope that there will be another and another). As in Assassins and Pacific Overtures, Mr. Sondheim has again collaborated with John Weidman, who wrote the book. Road Show also boasts the… Continue

I am sooooo sorry it took so long to reply!!!!! I didn't even see your post until today! I'm sorry! I've really gotta check my stage more often!
I saw Billy Elliot on Saturday and you were so right! It was amazing, from beginning to end, definatly one of, if not the best, shows I have ever seen. The music was so...powerful. Can't think of any other way to describe it.
Best wishes,
Connie

Hello again Beth. In response to seeing all three Billy's, it was both luck and some planing. I work for a company where I am very lucky to get to see a lot of shows for free. The first time I went I was lucky to be going for free and had the opportunity to see Trent. The second time I went I had a friend get tickets and we ended up seeing Kiril. I knew all I had left to see was David. After reading some other boards on who was going on for Billy each night, there was some sort of rotation that seemed had formed. So, I bought tickets (and in the $41.50 level which are still GREAT) on a night I thought David would be going on. Turns out he did. So, it took a lot of planing and luck. I hope you get the opportunity to get back and see it sometime when it isn't so hard to get tickets in a reasonable price range.
