I SEE EVERYTHING! Listening to Cast Recordings

One of my favorite things to do in New York is to take my dogs on a long walk in Central Park and listen to an entire cast recording. To tell the truth, when I'm in New York, I do this multiple times a week! I love either rediscovering, or getting a full listen through, a score I know and love.

A recent example is Baby, which I hadn’t listened to in a while. I had forgotten how fun it is - "Fatherhood Blues" anyone?!

When I was much younger, my parents… Continue

I SEE EVERYTHING: The Norman Conquests

Most shows only require two and a half hours of your time at most, but one this season (and this is pretty rare) is almost 8 hours! For me, those 8 hours flew by in a snap.

If you have seen it or heard about it, you can probably guess that I’m talking about The Norman Conquests, which won this year's Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. It's not really a full 8-hour play with an intermission or two, but instead a comedic trilogy of plays running in repertory at the… Continue

I SEE EVERYTHING! Including Regional Theatre

When a regional theater announces cool casting for an upcoming show, or if it’s a show or production I’m particularly interested in, I will try to make it to that production. Most recently I ventured with Jennifer Tepper and Anika Chapin to Paper Mill Playhouse to see their awesome production of 1776. It was my first exposure to the show and the great cast did not disappoint.

Something hilarious happened at 1776 that I have never seen in a Broadway theater.… Continue

I SEE EVERYTHING! More Tony Nomination Wishes

Last week I talked about some musicals that I think should have been nominated for Tonys but weren’t. This week, I’d like to discuss plays.

I was very surprised by the snub of Daniel Radcliffe for Leading Actor in a Play for his brave and terrific performance in Equus. And I think Bill Irwin deserved a nomination for Leading Actor in a Play, as well, for Waiting for Godot.

In Leading Actress in a Play, I thought that Kristin Scott Thomas… Continue

I SEE EVERYTHING! What's Your Tony Vote?

Okay, I know this is late and everyone else has moved on. But, maybe some of you still want to discuss the Tony Awards? I think everyone can agree that were some major snubs, even in the nominations.

You can probably guess that my first entry on the snub list is – Jason Robert Brown. My hopes for the score of 13 were exceptionally high (after Parade, The Last 5 Years, Songs for a New World) and it did not disappoint. Of course I thought my cast-mates were… Continue

Are you sad without the cast of 13?

Liz sang at a concert that Andrea McArdle put together at my high school. I ran lights for the show. Liz was rehearsing and I was watching, and when she turned and saw that I was the only one there, she said, "I guess I'll just ask you this. Can I say something before I sing my songs?" This is the one, the only Liz Callaway asking ME if it's okay to say a few words before her song. I said, "You can juggle if you want to!"

She's one of my all time favorites. Very jealous that you got to see her Metropolitan Room show. I wanted to, but money being what it is, that didn't happen. I forgive all rambling about Liz Callaway... she's worth rambling about!

I remember that when I started the thread about making a CD for a friend who's having a baby, you suggested "Stop Time" from Big, which I nixed as too morbid. But it did lead me to fall in love with the song again and track down a recording that Liz Callaway made, and she actually cut the last verse that has all the morbid stuff in it. So, perhaps I can use the song, after all! In any event, thanks for making the suggestion.
