I am new to this board, so I wanted to take this opportunity, if allowed, to vent about the current state of "Gypsy." First, let me say that "Gypsy" is probably my all-time favorite show. I have been fortunate enough to see every major incarnation of the show: Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Roz Russell, Bernadette Peters, and, of course, Patti Lupone. to be honest, I have never been a Lupone fan. The voice wobbles; she sings flat, her diction is sloppy, she tends to over-emote,etc. But I went to see "Gypsy" last summer at City Center and was totally blown away. Her performance was the best of all the Rose's I have seen. I was so taken with it, that I saw it twice during that run. I just got back from NY where I saw it a third time. I went primarily based on the NY Tomes review in which her performance was re-evaluated and praised. I wasn't surprised at the Tony win. Based on what I saw last summer, she clearly deserved it -- hands down! Imagine my dismay at the totally wretched performance I witnessed last week. There was Lupone, chewing up the scenery. I had to pull my arm in for fear she would chew that next. The performance was so over-the-top that it brought back all the memories of the things I have hated about Lupone in the past. She was out of character, went up on the lyrics twice, started shouting from out of nowhere. And her "Rose's Turn." Well, Jule Styne must be turning in his grave. It really killed the memory of two great performances last summer. Perhaps live thetare is meant to be seen only once.
