don't get me wrong, we all love to see the stars (or just brilliant performers) who were originally cast in a role, but where would they be if they didn't have understudies? (done-zo, that's where) often times when understudies are going on they are not given as much support from the audience as the person who normally plays the role. that being said, most of the time performances where the understudy is on stage are far more interesting because it brings a new energy to the show. the performers who are on stage 8 shows a week can easily go into autopilot and just go through the motions (especially in long running shows), but if there is someone new or different on stage, they are more likely to be paying attention.
my question is this: who is your favorite understudy that you have seen? it could be on broadway, off broadway, on tour, regionally, doesn't matter. who do you think played the role just as well (if not better) than the person who was originally cast.

my 3 favorites are jessica lea patty as cassie, michelle aravena as diana, and grant turner a zach in a chorus line. my brother was in the show, and i ushered at the theater, so i saw many different people play many different roles, and it really kept the show fresh and different when there was an insert in the playbill.

I loved Jay Armstrong as Claude in Hair.
I loved Julie Reiber as Elphaba on Broadway. She was great in the role and her voice was stellar!
The woman who was Lauren Graham's understudy in Guys and Dolls was really amazing! She's the only understudy i've seen on broadway, i guess i've been lucky
