As I'm getting more and more into the technical side of theatre, I was wondering what colleges have good programs in this. And if you know of one, telling me what kind of grades and the type of experience they look for would always be a plus. ;)

Do you know what you are looking for in location, size, money, and all that. To me, which I may be wrong about, but to me that is the place to start, it makes finding schools so much easier.
Well, I'd like to go to college in a city, preferably Boston or New York. I don't want to go to a really expensive school, since I've always thought that paying for a big-name school isn't worth it all the time and I don't want to be in too much debt after college. Personally, from hearing from older cousins and stuff, I've gotten the impression that unless you're going for something like law or medicine, name-brand schools are overrated. I wouldn't mind a larger school, but I'm not too picky about the size.
I went to Marymount Manhattan College, and my friends in tech theatre are amazing! They're so talented, I can't even begin to explain. I'm out of there a couple of years, so I'm not sure exactly what they're looking for these days. I had pretty good grades, but not the best.

It's a very small college on the Upper East Side with a very strong arts program. The three biggest majors are Theatre, Dance and Communications.
I'm wanting to go into Technical Theater as well, but I'd prefer my school to be in California.

Also, if anyone knows what it's like for a tech theater person to make the move to NYC after the schooling, i'd be interested in hearing about that as well!
Only thing about those colleges is the prices. :/ Unless I get a scholarship or something.

Also, would technical theatre schools like it more if I were working in community theatre doing lighting or doing my school theatre with acting? I might have to choose, and I'm leaning toward the community theatre.
Definitely community theater ,no question, unless your school is a well known school for producing theatre students which there aren't that many of.
It's theatre program is pretty good, but only for actors. Stage crew is a different story. And yeah, I'd rather do community theatre. Working on a production of The Producers is essentially my dream. The only thing that would make it more of a dream would be if I was directing.
My daughter is looking for a tech theatre college in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Does anyone have recommendations?  We already know about VCU and the North Carolina School for the Arts.
Then you're done, if you want to go to a tech theatre school those are the ones. Full disclosure I go to VCU :) That's not to say there aren't other great schools and great theatre programs in the region but they are a completely different experiences. She needs to know what kind of college experience she is looking for and that will really be the decision maker.
There are people who know the answers to your questins but you are going to have to find them. Ask around at your local school, theatre, theatrical union.
haha, I'm actually no longer interested in technical theatre . . . this was from a while ago . . .but thanks!
Let me amplify. I tutored a student going to Brooklyn Tech. That school has a college advisor dpartment. At Polytechnic, there was a recruiter who was familiar with other engineering schools. So thee are people. Just keep asking.
