So today I bought the Love Never Dies cast recording. So what do I think of it? It's not too bad, really. The music is actually alright, although the rock and roll songs made me laugh because of the ridiculous mental pictures they created in my mind. If you don't pay attention to stupidity of the plot, the music really isn't too bad. Although the stupidity of the plot can make the cast album seem "so bad it's good" sometimes.

I suggest checking it out. Just disregard the crappola story that goes along with it.

Ugh...I hate it with a passion . I mean, I have listened to it for the sake of the music- NOT the horrid storyline- But the music in itself...Quite honestly...It sucks. There are only 1 or 2 songs that I found to be decent and worth anything at all.

The soundtrack is just so...cheap and tawdry....Especially the Bathing Beauty song...The singers SUCK horribly- most of the characters have the most dreadful voices...and some of them sound so...cartoonish...or almost like they belong in a "fun" musical- like "Wicked" or something- This is supposed to be SERIOUS for the most part and it sounds like playtime to me....Plus- it was the wrong setting to put this show in for such a serious subject since coney island is "fun" I don't know....none of this fits....

And the thing i hate most is how much they sing or say "Coney island" Those words do NOT sound good sung...so i wish they would have changed the setting....and the godawful seagull and ocean sounds is about to drive me mad!

I hate it so much...i wish I had not even wasted the money...or the time...but...what can you do?? I mean, i successfully put the original story out of my head and JUST listened to the Soundtrack for the sake of a "new musical"- but even then, the music was horrendous and I could hardly bear to listen to it....What in the world is going on with ALW?? Boy...he must be hitting the bottle pretty hard to come up with this trash....

Honestly, the ONLY songs that I can handle are "Till I hear you sing"- the song is beautiful- Its quite haunting actually....Now- if more of the OCR was like that song, than it would have been a wonderful one- and I would have LOVED it. And "The beauty underneath" is actually really interesting...i like that one a lot- but it doesn't fit in any way at all with the subject, and music style of the previous tracks...so it sounds very out of place....And I cannot stand the repetative "Yes"'s in it- Its obnoxious-The song sounds far too "sexual" to be in this musical....But maybe that is just me...i would rather not practically hear Orgasms (or almost such) in a song, thank you very much.
But in all truth- the second half of the soundtrack is slightly tolerable...More-so than the first half...meaning, I don't want to bash my head against a wall as badly as i do with the first :D

*My reference to Wicked- I was describing a fun musical- I love it- This was not a negative reference. LOL
I actually like the music. The story is kinda bad, but I think it is original as well. It must have been kinda hard to find a story that would change/end the Phantom (just as this story did) But yea.. I actually find the music entertaining.
But yea.. the story is bullshit... And it is true that there isn't really one style of music...

Sierra and Raming are wonderful singers, just like all the other actors. I'm probably going to see it the 22nd of March in London so I'll see how the rest of the musical is. The photos that ive seen make the set look really interesting.
I didn't like all of the songs, but there were a few I did enjoy. I liked "Heaven By The Sea", "Til I Hear You Sing", and "Coney Island Waltz". I thought most of the love songs were just cliched and boring, and the other songs were just uninteresting, but none were exactly "horrible." Just not that great. "Devil Take The Hindmost" isn't too bad either, except for the fact that it ruins Raoul's character. I mean, he was my favorite character in the original. I would have loved to have seen this song as a confrontational song between them in the first musical or something. I just don't like the circumstances it take place under because it's so out of character.

But the Bathing Beauty song . . . that song annoys me. It's like "Honey Bun" from South Pacific, but gone
horribly wrong.

Some of the music, like "Beauty Underneath", is just hilarious to listen to as a Phantom fan. The image of the phantom just rocking out like that is just entertaining. I actually like that song as a rock song by itself, but add in the fact that the phantom is singing it, and it just ruins it.
"beauty Underneath" is wonderful...but so strange...I mean, if you heard it on the radio, would you think "Phantom?" No way...It doesn't match up at all...I suppose in a way, it makes it even more entertaining.

Can you imagine Erik grabbing a candelabra and "air guitaring" with it?? HAHAHAHHAHA Sorry...THAT is just the image I get.... I know...i know....
I might have to draw something like that now . . . :)

The last minute or so of that song is a bit strange. The immature, perverted side of my mind acts up when I listen to it. -_-

Oh, and I forgot to add "Why Does She Love Me?" to my list of songs I liked. I HATE that it's Raoul singing it, because he's become a drunk for no reason at all, but the actual song is emotional and I think you can really feel his pain. If ALW had given more of a backstory to why Raoul is now a drunken gambler (because something would have had to have changed for his character to change that drastically), I might really like it, but that whole part of the plot seems stupid without an explanation. It would have been better suited for another character in some other musical out there, though.
"The Phantom of The Opera" is a rock song, so it probably isn't that weird that there are more rock songs in this one considering that was the most popular song from the original. But then again...
Yeah, but it didn't remind me of rock as much as these songs do. These ones sound like they came from Spring Awakening or something like that. It just doesn't make sense to me, since they constantly switch between showtune-style songs and rock and roll. ALW should have just picked one and stuck to it.
"Beauty Underneath" is great- but some of the vocals reminded me of tracks in "Rent"...Strange comparison, I know...But they really honestly did...i couldn't help but have Rent pop into my head as soon as I heard it.... My husband even heard it, and hes not into musicals at all- but hes a musician of over 20 years- and He saw a comparison right away...
Well, I know that, But the point is that with POTO the title song REALLY works for it. But this new one, seems like a pathetic attempt to relive the Phantom title song all over again...and thats just sad. It doesnt work. because it is automatically compared to Phantom Of the Opera, and they dont match up
The one I really liked was "Till I Hear You Sing." I fully agree with Acey when she says it was haunting. And I also liked the kid on the album, don't know who he is.

But "Bathing Beauty?" WHAT IS THAT? It totally destroys the musical tension building up. The singers are so.....so.....ugh I need to come up with a new word! It's like a mixture of cartoonish and screechy. When they day "Hello" I feel like they're all talking to little kids. It just feels wrong. And I don't like "Beauty Underneath" at all either. I understand that "Phantom of the Opera" was a rock song, but it seemed to fit with the setting of Christine being taken into the Phantom's lair. This one follows "Beautiful," a much different piece. It feels like the rock song just popped out of nowhere.

IMHO, I think ALW could have done a much, much better job. And while he's at that, he should change the awful storyline.
Kristina- You are right about "Beauty Underneath"- With Phantom Of The Opera- The "rock" song really fits, Its perfect where it is- and the setting works- Christine taking Erik's hand as he takes her into his lair...But..."Beauty underneath" doesnt work at all with the timing or with the subject matter surrounding the song. Plus- The ending is...strange..Really...I feel like there should have been a better transition musically...But maybe thats just me...Its hard to explain. LOL- my husband thought the beginning of "Beauty underneath' sounded like the quiet part in "Video killed the radio star" HAHAHA.....

"bathing Beauty" sounds like it belongs in Little mermaid or something....Its so....Bouncy...its terrible. And I am GLAD somebody else agrees with me that the singers are awful in it. It literally sounds like the sisters from the little mermaid movie....

I agree with you 1000 percent
Thank you Acey. :)

My music class had a L-O-N-G conversation about this musical, and a lot of people agreed that it was an awful, awful score (except for Till I Hear You Sing, I still really like that one) But, there were like 5 people who kept saying "Oh come on, just give it a chance!" And they were the fangirls who love anything that has to do with Phantom, and not really caring about the storyline or the music. I think that after that, I see where ALW was really going with this musical.....and unfortunately, it's working to an extent.
