Well two things, that there are parts in "Keep It Gay" from The Producers that are reminiscent of the tune from La Cage Aux Folles? Well, just asking.
And Number Two:
Has anyone else noticed that a fan base can sometimes ruin a show?
I used to love Rent and I still enjoy it, but sometimes I feel like I'm being judged as one of those teeny bopper fans when I say it......I don't know, maybe it's just me.........However, A friend did say that he didn't want N2N to gather too many people, I said why not, but I understand what she means.

I think a fan base can ruin a show, because I saw everything I disliked about Rent reflected in many of the audience members around me when I saw the show. I saw none of the honor and all of the obnoxious self-righteousness.
yeah! With Rent some older friends who were from that era say that the younger audiences don't quite receive it like they did. I hate to say it, but I feel disconnected from a show when I feel that I'll be judged as one of those fans.
I know what you mean. It's why I'm almost ashamed to say that I'm a fan of Phantom of the Opera sometimes. There's so many fans I've met (at least online) who think the phantom is hot and sexy and they want to be his girlfriend. Um . . . if he is so hot and sexy, then where did the original basis for any of the versions, including the musical, go? Fanbases also make me think twice about seeing shows if they're like Legally Blonde and such where teenage fangirls call it their favorite musical when it's the only one they've seen. In my theatre class at school last year, there were so many people who would say, "The only musicals I like are Legally Blonde and Wicked" and then consider themselves to be theatre fanatics. O.o

Fortunately the Producers (my other obsession) isn't like that . . . there's hardly any fans. =( I know about 2 or 3 online. And I'll have to check that thing out about Keep It Gay and La Cage. XD
Yay for Producers fans!!! ^^ I know one or two other people online that are about as crazy for it as me, it has kind of lost it's popularity. =(

If you happen to have a deviantART account, I have a fan club for it over there ;)
The Producers was an important show more for what it did to the business of Broadway rather than the artform of musical theatre itself, and the fans don't seem to have that much perspective when it comes to the business side, unfortunately. Something like that, for those of us who were around and cognitive of the broadway scene at the time, was a huge deal. But, as Max Bialystock says, "How quickly they forget!"

The immense failure of Young Frankenstein also could have done something to tarnish the memory of The Producers.
Yeah. I only know of two or three other really big fans, we just think of the story and love it for it's humor and it's characters. I was only 7 when it was first on Broadway, so I wasn't really into theatre at the time. I only discovered it two years ago, and have been in love with it ever since.
Wait until you're a little older and you have friends who remember when it first opened.

Not to sound condescending, and if you don't fit into this category then I'm not talking about you, but a lot of younger fans seem to only be familiar with what's new and hot right now. You'll find when you get to college and then into the real world that a lot of adults have a somewhat broader scope (though a lot of adults have a very narrow scope, too).
I wish I could remember it when it first opened. I just wasn't old enough. XD

Well, I actually like a lot of older musicals. The Music Man, Oliver, Hello Dolly, and La Cage Aux Folles just to name a few. I'm also a huge geeky fan of all the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. ;) I'm familiar with what's popular right now, but I also like to go back and look at older musicals that were popular and even some that never really made it that big.
ay to the men!
Agreed!
I agree so much on the second one... Oy.

My voice teacher and I were talking and she asked me what some of my favorite musicals were (she's trying to figure out my voice even still, haha, as my tone is changing and all that) and I said "things like Jekyll & Hyde, The Light in the Piazza, Wicked..." As soon as I said "Wicked", I got a look. "That" look... Like, "Oh, no surprise there".

Since I've been at college, I don't hear much of "omg, I luv leglaly blond && wicked!11!" and people only liking a show because it's the only one they've ehard of or JUST found out about...which I'm so thankful for...

Though I still love Wicked and Rent as I watch them from an actors standpoint and learn from watching... Yes, I enjoy the shows and want to smack the teeny bopper girls, but I want to improve myself as a performer by taking mental notes. (Donna Vivino? Holycrap. I took a few mental notes watching her onstage)
Thank you sister!
