This is something that happened to me a few months ago, and I am now deciding to put it up as a discussion.

I was in school and walked into my English class, where a student not in my class was talking to the teacher.  Just as she was leaving, she turned to me and asked, "Are you in drama class?"  "Yes," I replied.  "Oh," she said, "because you dress very theatrically."

This leads me to ask, do you think actors (or anyone in show business) dress a certain way?

I suppose it would help if I tell you about how I dress.  My basic outfit would be something along the lines of khakis and a shirt, usually black or red.  I do differ some times; I never wear blue jeans, but I do own two pairs of black jeans and a pair of gray jeans.  I will sometimes where white and black with the gray jeans (usually a white shirt under black short sleeves, which is actually what I was wearing that day, if I recall correctly).  A majority of times I will wear all black, which is something I hear a lot of people in show business do.  Also, I never wear sweatpants or a sweatshirt.

I mean, I like to look nice, but I never really thought of myself as dressing theatrically.

What do you guys think?

... I just realized how much black I wear
But besides that, I usually wear vintage jeans, an "artsy" or bohemian shirt, ballet flats. Or, jeans and a show shirt. And yeah, Kasee's totally right, I love dressing up/nicely.
I was visiting my brother in New Paltz, NY. For those of you who don't know, it's a very quaint podunky crunchy granola town upstate, close to Poughkeepsie. I'm a Manhattanite and a theatre guy. Me and New Paltz, not always the bestmix, though it's nice to get away every now and then. Anywho, my bus pulled in rather late, and I was walking to his house in the dark past all these Lizzie Borden type houses, freaking out. Then I realize that I have nothing to worry about. There I am in black jeans with a black jacket, a black scarf and a black hat carrying a black bag. I probably look way scary to any of these people than they do to me!
I never wear black but I always dress up very fashionably. I live in Florida so I'm always overdressed. Everybody is always wearing shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops and I wear really dressy and trendy clothes. Being a theatre major, I'm always around theatre people and I've noticed three kinds of theatre people: 1- The Pajama Actors: They usually like to wear lose and comfortable dark clothes (necessary for warm-ups and stuff but they'll wear it all the time). 2-The uptight actors: Very trendy, fashionable, although not very practical here in Florida or when doing acting exercises. I would put myself here. I like to look nice but some of my classes require me to wear clothes I don't care about. The "LOOK AT ME" actors: Of course, every actor likes to be looked at from time to time (you wouldn't want to be an actor if you didn't) but this category will sometimes wear the most ridiculous clothes, pattern and colors (and a combination of everything) to get your attention. And I have to admit that sometimes the result is pretty good and it works for some people but other times it's just too much! These actors like to wear a lot of accessories, including scarves, sweater, boots, big belts, hats, fedoras, etc etc. Yeah, even under the Florida sun. Have another category?
actors who are dancers? who wear leos and tights most of the time? or does it fall under the catagory of pajama actors?

i dress very comfy- jeans, basic t-shirt, sneakers, sweatpants for when i have to go right to dance but over all i think i dress pretty normally...
Yay! Another Floridian!
well, i am an actress (among other stuff) and i dress weird every day. a week ago i went to school in an outfit that was jeanie from hair meets any daughter in fiddler. and i just wear strange clothes mostly. i think we all dress totally different in this community until we step onto the stage. oh but if you want stereotypes, scarves, black, leotards, jeans, and broadway show tshirts with vests should cover it. i am actually currently following most of that sterotype lol :D.
I love wearing leggings and long tank tops with long sleeved shirts under them (black!). I am also obsessed with pants that look like regular jeans but are actually really strechy and you can move in every possible direction in them. And then I just wear regular dark blue jeans a lot too, but I don't like them so much. And I love American Apparel sweatshirts with show tshirts under them (with jeans, otherwise its long tank tops or short dresses, for the most part).
But when I go to New York or a show, I tend to wear leggings and like a nice short dress.
People think I'm theatrical apparently because all I used to wear at one point was just Broadway shirts... Now not as much. But yes, it's usually a classy and very stylish way, sometimes a little loud and artsy in general. There's also even the make up (this sounds weird) but thick eyeliner combined with such outfits screams THEATRE MAJOR!!!

I'm a music major, we don't give a crap. xD
Oh the makeup... A lot of girls either wear dark eyeliner on their lower rims, none at all, or are like me and just line the top rim and the rest of natural. We're a very natural and clean looking bunch.

But the nail polish is like, dark red, dark purple, bright teal, neon green... Lime green.
If anything, I wear eyeliner on the lower rims. Then again, I'm twelve (girls start wearing make up freakishly early at my school-- I'm considered a "late bloomer"). The only reason I ever started anyway was because I noticed that it looked good one day after I couldn't scrub all my stage eyeliner off.
I'm always wearing black, but I'm a techie/musician/designer, NOT an actor. So draw your own conclusions from that.

However, I do think that you can tell a theatre person from the way that they dress. I can't pinpoint it exactly, but I can usually tell if someone's in theatre by looking at their outfit...I'm not sure why.
Well, it seems theater people dress nicely- We dont dress like scum usually, LOL.

For myself, I NEVER leave the house without high heels or high heeled boots on, I ALWAYS have my makeup and hair done, I usually always dress in all black- Not in the "emo" way, but in the classy way meaning, no logos, no gaudy things, And I NEVER ever wear jeans- i think they look very trashy on me- so i dont, i always wear slacks or skirts, and I love to wear dresses, and things like that....

I mean, you cant really TELL someone is an "artsy" type by dress all the time, but you can, sometimes.
