I have a couple of theatre trips to NYC coming up, and I wanted to hear some of your experiences with the TKTS ticket booth. I'm not a gambler by nature, and some of what I'd like see doesn't often show up at the TKTS booth. However, you know..desperate times..

So, have you been able to get good seats at a good price to good play at the booth?

What has been your best experience? Are there mistakes you made that we ALL can learn from?

TKTS sells most top price tickets at 50% off usually $55. Thants the good news.
The bad news are: the long line, not sure if the show you want to see is on sale, and the worst tickets in the price range (the theater box office keep the good tickets for themselves)

In most cases I prefer to buy tickets in advance using discount codes issued by the productions, You can buy in advance (usually around 2 month in advace) and get the best tickets available. most prices are $65 to $75. The MUCH better seats and knowing you have tickets for your favorite shows, are worth the extra cost.

There are several sites where you can find the discounts. My favorite is www.broadwaybox.com which has the largest selection of offers, and you can find all info with no need to sign up as a member.

I saw Ave Q (again) for $61 last week. Center orchestra seats. Loved it. Bought thru BroadwayBox.

You actually do not buy the tickets on BroadwayBox. They just link you to Telecharge or Ticketmaster with the right discount code. Great invention!

Enjoy NY ;)
Yeah, I'm queen of the discount code. I was just wondering if I would do better with TKTS. Probably not. However, is it a good thing for last minute deals? For example, if I decide to do a lottery on my Feb. trip, and it doesn't happen, what are my chances of getting something decent at the TKTS at the last minute? Are the lines long all day up until curtain?

They stop selling for a certain showtime but I'm not sure what time that is.

If it's something last minute, TKTS is the way to go. I went on a Saturday around... 6:00 maybe? Or 7:00 and there wasn't a line at all and I ended up getting really good Mezz seats to Spring Awakening (first viewing actually) for $55, I think it was.

I'm all about the advance ticket sales with discount codes but TKTS is a good gamble if you're just not sure. They don't sell for certain shows (I know Blonde and Wicked are two of them) at any time though.
Haiving seen Jersey Boys several times and having bought tickets over the years at TKTS, I would advise that you stand in line at the JB Box office for Standing Room only, if price is the issue ($26/ ticket) or wait in the JB cancellation line and get probably a great ticket for $125- worth every penny. The shows that have tickets through TKTS may not leave you with the 'WOW' experience you are looking for when you come to Broadway- or if you are lucky, they will, I hope.
TKTS is definitely a great way to get tickets, and if you have the time, I'd recommend you go the the booth at South Street Seaport. I waited all of 30 minutes there as opposed to an hour or so at the Marriott booth.

The people in the ticket booth will let you know whether or not the seats are partial view or way high up in the mezzanine. Just make sure you go with options. Keep checking the board in pick a top 3 or 4 shows you'd like to see, and see when you get up to the booth which works best for you, cost-wise and seat wise.

I'd also recommend putting yourself on the mailing lists for broadway websites that offer heads-ups for dicount tic, like theatrewatch from the NY times or Theatre Mania. Check websites like Playbill.com to see what shows are likely to be discounted.
if u dont wanna gamble and u know what day u r going. i recommend going right to the threate and getting ur tix. u get to pick the seat.
I second the recommendation of broadwaybox.com.

Something to think about (although hopefully you'll be ok by February) is the impending strike. I'm going to NYC in November, and I'll probably end up doing a lot of TKTS for the B'way stuff I wanna see, just in case...I don't want to buy tickets that become moot if there's a strike.

One thing to be wary of is the non-TKTS ticket sellers hanging around TKTS. We bought tix for The Color Purple from a guy. He was hawking them as great tickets in the center section. They were legit tix, but were in the center section of the very last row of the balcony.

Next night we got TKTS for Beauty and the Beast and ended up sitting on the front row. So you never know what you're in for.

One advantage of the South Street Seaport TKTS is that you can buy tickets for a matinee on the day before the performance. And the line is definitely shorter!
just an fyi i had tickets a few years back to rent the day they went on strike in march and they will either refund the ticket or u can see it any day you want
I've generally had very good luck at TKTS. I come from three hours out of town and wouldn't do it for a show that I had my heart set on or if I knew my time to stand in a line was limited.

But the only time I haven't been able to get tickets there was for "The Phantom of the Opera" two years ago, but there were two factors that made it a problem. It was Julie Hanson's last day so seats were limited and I was with a fairly large group. If we'd just needed two or three tickets, we'd have been fine. We ended up getting tickets for "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels." Not the best seats, but...again...it was a larger group. If we'd just wanted a couple, we'd have gotten better seats.

But I've gotten good seats for "Sweeney Todd," "Hairspray," and "Forbidden Broadway" there and I'd do it again.

I do use BroadwayBox often, though, when I feel I need to get my tickets in advance.
some tips...
1. Don't go to the south seaport location, even though there is hardly a line, they only sell limited tickets
2. Producers release tickets all day, some of the best seats I have got are minutes before the curtain
3. Limited view seats are actually good, they are usually the box seats and work for most shows!
4. The line looks crazy long, but it moves amazingly fast!
5. At this time of year you can get anything, minus the few shows that sell capacity (Wicked, Jersey Boys)

Although, if you don't like lines and the gambling aspect....subscribe to playbill.com (ITS FREE) You get discount ticket codes and sometimes they are cheaper than TKTS and at this time of the year lots are available, that way you will save time and will know which show you have on what night!! They even have discount Spring Awakening right now!!!!!!
I suggest going to

Theatremania.com
Broadwaybox.com
playbill.com

and joining those to become a member because you just go to the link write the code in and get the tickets for anywhere from $25-$85 a ticket which is less then norm $111 plus you get orch. and you know you have the tickets.... plus if the show you want to see isnt on there it prolly wont be at TKTS and if it is its going to be rear mez

this is much better plus.... NO LINE :)
