Hi everyone!

I am doing some research and I need your opinions!

I am writing a blog about the sudden abundance of musical theatre-based reality TV shows such as Grease: You're the one that I want, Legally Blonde: The Search for Elle Woods and more recently, High School Musical: Get in the Picture (which premiered last Sunday) on ABC.

I wanted to know what your thoughts are on this subject. Do reality TV shows about musical theatre offer the opportunity to expose younger audiences to musical theatre or do they hurt musical theatre as an art form? Any thoughts, opinions and comments are very much appreciated.

Your comment could be featured in our upcoming blog! Please send them in ASAP!

As an example, this is what Steven Vincent from the Disney Channel said about these kinds of reality shows, specifically HSM:

"... these films have clicked with young fans. "By blending a traditional, 'break into song' format with contemporary music, they make something old new again for our audience, who for the most part probably didn't grow up on musicals," he explains. "Now they're being exposed to musicals in a way that they can really relate to, with stories from their point of view. I think part of the reason it works is that it's traditional. It's not trying to reinvent a 'modern musical' -- when the girl gets her heart broken, she turns around and sings a song about it. Or the guys are in the middle of discussing sports and suddenly they're dancing."

I Personally Don't Think It's A Good Idea. A Lot Of People Would Go There To Get Their 15min Of Fame & Not For The Sake Of The Theatre! I'm WIthin The Age Range & I Can Relate To & Love The Older/Actual Musicals As Well; Jekyll & Hyde, CATS, Wicked, etc. To Me, It Seems Almost Like Selling Out The Meaning Of A Musical.
I do not think that these reality shows are necessarily the downfall of theatre...but they can't be helping. If these people want to be on Broadway, then they need to WORK for it, like performers have been doing since the beginning of the craft. These shows pick the people with the best story, or the best looks, and not necessarily the best talent. There are tons of great performers out there who aren't getting their shot at the stage, because these shows are picking people who have never even Heard of Actors Equity, while those hard-working performers are scrounging for hours at cabaret nights in night clubs. Let the hard-working aspiring actors get their shot at an audition, not the teenage kids who don't even know their theatre history.

Its stupied... what do they actually get? A music video.. wow!
I think its a bad idea. People work so hard to get on Broadway and its just a fast track to fame that doesnt necessarilt attract the most talented people. It also eliminates the chance for smaller stars in a show to move up after they were dedicated to the show b/c the leads are being filled by people picked on a reality show.I think its money maker that is hurting the integrity of musical theater. I mean its not like the people on these shows are bad, in fact most are talented, but still i prefer the traditional method of auditioning.
